What: Meditation and teachings on peace with Buddhist nun Gen Kelsang Kunden from Guelph.
Objective
To continue grounding our work and our organizing in the principles of peace and compassion.
Significance
This event welcomed in new friends and expanded our connections. The event also served as a clear public demonstration of our commitment to peace as an organization.
Challenges
Welcoming any guests from far away comes with inherent logistical challenges. We are so grateful to Gen Kunden for traveling all the way from Guelph for this event.
Result
The event was successful; we made new friends and we enjoyed a rare moment of communal quiet reflection amidst our often busy organizing activities.
Lessons Learned
Some of the insights shared by Gen Kunden include:
- Delusions such as anger see enemies everywhere, but this is not an accurate reflection of reality.
- We are all dependent upon one another. Buddha taught that we are like a single cell in the vast body of life.
- It is beneficial to spend time without gadgets or noise, to spend some time each day in meaningful contemplation. Go for a walk, contemplate, and leave our devices at home.
- We can practice compassion and peace in every moment, with every breath.
Future Implications
We were reminded of the tremendous importance of our friendships with aligned spiritual communities as we peacefully strive together toward a future free from hate.
